An attempt at Torchwood to sent Rose and TenToo back to Rose’s original dimension goes very wrong. Or, as the Doctor puts it: “A little bit sideways. Well, backways. Well, backwards. Well…” Backways or backwards, Rose and TenToo make it to the right dimension, but in the process are also sent back in time over 100+ years. With no way of returning to their former time, they live out their lives in the 1870s as Dr. and Mrs. John and Rose Smith. One hundred and forty three years later, their Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Granddaughter finds an old hope chest tucked away in the dusty corner of an attic in her family’s home. Inside the chest she discovers a stack of very old letters tied with an aged yellow ribbon, several torn and water-stained photographs, and a leather bound journal written by her ancestors, filled with fantastic and romantic stories about aliens and far away planets, and of course, soul mates…
